Principal's Corner

Dear Ophir STEAM Academy Families,

The staff at Ophir is thrilled to welcome you to the 2014-2015 school year! We are looking forward to an exciting and productive year, filled with a multitude of learning opportunities through the continued implementation and expansion of our STEAM program.

With the cleaning of the classrooms completed, the floors freshly waxed, and the blacktop being sealed and re-striped as I write this letter, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of all students on August 14th. Our staff has been busy over the past few months, as well, taking advantage of several professional development opportunities in a variety of areas including the California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP), the district provided Google Boot Camp, College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) training, and a STEM Academy hosted by UC Davis and Sacramento County Office of Education, to name a few.

These trainings provided valuable insight and direction into the continued development of our rigorous and relevant curriculum and instructional practices related to the California Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Throughout the year, we will be revisiting the concepts and themes presented in these trainings to further our sustainable growth in instruction, learning and meeting individual students’ needs to increase student achievement.

This year we are pleased to welcome additional staff members to the Ophir community. James Haskins joins our school as the 7th grade homeroom teacher, serving as the language arts and social studies teacher for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Kelley Uyeno has joined our team as the 5th grade teacher. We are also excited to introduce Laurel Tanner, who will be serving as school psychologist for Ophir.

At Ophir, we will continue to work collaboratively with students, staff and parents/community to inspire our students to achieve at high levels. Staff will work collaboratively to ensure students receive a quality instructional program through a continued dedication to CRLP and STEAM. With the support of the entire community, I am confident that we will continue to accomplish great things in the 2014-15 school year.

We are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to continuing the strong relationships and partnerships that have been developed within the Ophir school community. We encourage all parents and families to become involved in our school community through the many volunteer opportunities offered during the school year. PTC has been organizing activities for the upcoming year, and they can use your help! We will also be seeking parent involvement in our School Site Council, our campus beautification crew, and as classroom volunteers and field trip chaperones.

We are looking forward to a great year at Ophir STEAM Academy!
