Principal's Corner

Dear Ophir STEAM Academy Families,

We would like to invite our parents and community members to the next School Site Council meeting on Tuesday, February 3rd at 2:45 pm in the school library. Over the past two months, the School Site Council has been reviewing and updating the Comprehensive School Safety Plan, which sets school goals and action plans for the school year. Our team has worked collaboratively to produce our final document for public comment. These plans will then be submitted for approval by the LUSD Board of Trustees. For a detailed agenda, please visit our school website, click on the “parent” tab, select “volunteer opportunities”, and go to the link for “School Site Council”. An attachment of the agenda is located at the bottom of this page.

Please remember the importance of student attendance. Not only does regular attendance lead to increased academic growth for all students, but it also helps to maintain funding for our school through the Average Daily Attendance Rate (ADA). Please support our teachers, students and school by scheduling appointments and trips around school hours and the district calendar. You help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

We are excited to announce the start of another after school enrichment program, Sign Club to our 5th through 8th grade students. This club, which will meet on most Thursdays from 2:45 to 3:45, will provide enrichment and growth opportunities for students interested in becoming more fluent in American Sign Language. This class is limited to 30 students and is on a “first come, first served” basis. Flyers with attached permission forms were sent home with students today. If interested, please complete the form and turn it into the main office.

We want to congratulate our two fifth grade students, Zachary S. and Nate G., who were recognized as the grand champions of the first ever, robotics tournament. After learning general robotics and programming skills, students spent ten weeks building and perfecting their robots. Last week these robots faced off in a double-elimination competition, and after the dust settled, “RoboRex” was the last robot standing.

We are extremely proud of all the students who participated in the piloting of this program. It was amazing to see how quickly they picked up on the concepts of robotics, programming, and the application of the engineering design process. Congratulations to all our students and their magnificent robot creations. Our final robotics meeting for the first session is Wednesday, February 4th. Please be on the look-out within the next few weeks for more information regarding our next opportunity for Robotics Club.

Please be reminded that school is not in session on Friday, February 6th due to district staff development. During this day, our staff will be engaged in an “in depth” collaboration to further develop and refine instructional strategies in the areas of ELA, mathematics and technology that are aligned to the California Common Core State Standards. We are looking forward to a productive day.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Kevin Roche
